On the evening of Thursday, October 16, 2003 the North Massapequa Fire
Department was alerted for a house fire at 1915hrs. The address was 18
Jacqueline Road. First Assistant Chief Rich Erickson was first on the road
and the dispatcher advised him that he was receiving multiple calls for
this alarm. Chief Erickson was first on the scene and transmitted a
"Signal 10" working house fire with heavy fire and smoke showing from the
rear of the house. Chief of Department Kenneth Blinder arrived shortly
after Chief Erickson and assumed command of the scene.
Engine 665 from NMFD Company #3 arrived on scene simultaneously with the
Valley Stream Fire Department Engine #3, which happened to be passing by
on their way to the Fire Service Academy in Bethpage. The crew of 665,
with the assistance of the crew from Engine #3 of VSFD, stretched the
primary 1 3/4" attack line to the rear of the house. The crew of NMFD
Engine 662 then arrived on the scene and stretched the back up line from
665 to enter through the front door.
With fire spreading to the second story, the crew of VSFD Engine #3 was
put to work with a third attack line to the second story of the building.
NMFD Ladder #1 vented all windows and conducted primary and secondary
searches of the building yielding no victims or occupants. The house was
currently under renovation and there were no occupants at the time of the
fire. The house to the west of the fire building sustained minor exposure
damage to the siding.
Mutual aid units were called from Massapequa, South Farmingdale, Bethpage
and Wantagh. There were two minor firefighter injuries which were
transported to local area hospitals for treatment. After investigation by
the Nassau County Fire Marshall the fire was ruled accidental. All units
were released at 2210hrs.
